🌵 Care Guide
Mammillaria bombycina, commonly known as the Puff Ball Cactus, is a charming cactus admired for its dense, white, woolly spines that give it a soft and fluffy appearance. It usually develops a rounded body and can produce offsets over time, eventually forming an attractive cluster. This species is also appreciated for its beautiful pink to magenta flowers, which can form a ring around the crown.
☀️ Light
- Prefers bright light to full sun.
- Morning sunlight is beneficial for healthy growth and flowering.
- During extremely hot summer afternoons, provide some light shade to prevent scorching.
- Indoors, place it near a bright south or east-facing window.
- Gradually acclimate the plant to stronger sunlight if it has been grown in lower light.
💧 Watering
- Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry.
- Allow excess water to drain completely before watering again.
- Autumn & Winter: Reduce watering significantly and keep the plant relatively dry.
- ⚠️ Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet, as excess moisture can cause root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
- Prefers warm temperatures during active growth.
- Can tolerate cooler nights when kept dry.
- Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions.
- Good air circulation is beneficial, particularly in humid conditions.
🌱 Soil
- Requires a porous, fast-draining cactus mix.
- Add pumice, perlite, or coarse sand to improve drainage and aeration.
- A gritty, well-draining mixture is ideal for healthy root development.
- Avoid heavy soils that retain moisture for long periods.
🍽️ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Fertilize only while the plant is actively growing.
- Do not fertilize during the winter resting period.
🪴 Potting
- Use a pot with excellent drainage holes.
- Choose a container that is only slightly larger than the root system.
- Repot approximately every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.
- Handle carefully during repotting to avoid damaging its dense spines.
🌸 Flowering
- Produces beautiful pink to magenta tubular flowers.
- Flowers often appear in a ring around the crown of the plant.
- Flowering generally occurs during late spring to early summer.
- Bright light, proper watering, and a cool, relatively dry winter rest can encourage blooming.
🌵 Growth & Appearance
- Usually develops a rounded green body covered with dense white, woolly spines.
- Its fluffy appearance makes it particularly attractive as a collector’s cactus.
- Plants can produce offsets and gradually form attractive clusters.
- Mature plants can reach approximately 10–15 cm in diameter under suitable conditions.
🌱 Propagation
- Can be propagated from seeds or offsets.
- Offsets can be separated carefully and allowed to dry before planting in a porous, well-draining medium.
