🌵 Care Guide
Mammillaria spinosissima ssp. pilcayensis is a beautiful flowering cactus distinguished by its dense, short, pale glassy-yellow spines and elongated cylindrical stems. Native to the Pilcaya region of Guerrero, Mexico, this easy-to-grow subspecies can develop long, almost horizontal stems that may eventually lean or hang over the edge of a pot. Its attractive purple-pink flowers add to its appeal.
☀️ Light
- Thrives in bright light and good sunlight.
- Provide several hours of sunlight daily for healthy growth and abundant flowering.
- Indoors, place it near a bright south or east-facing window.
- Gradually acclimate the plant to stronger sunlight to avoid sunburn.
💧 Watering
- Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry.
- Autumn & Winter: Reduce watering and allow the plant to remain dry for longer periods.
- ⚠️ Avoid frequent watering or keeping the soil constantly moist, as this can lead to root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
- Prefers warm temperatures during the active growing season.
- Can tolerate cooler conditions when kept dry.
- Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions.
🌱 Soil
- Requires a porous, fast-draining cactus soil mix.
- Adding pumice, perlite, or coarse sand helps improve drainage.
- A gritty, mineral-rich mix is ideal for healthy root development.
🍽️ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Avoid fertilizing during the winter resting period.
🪴 Potting
- Use a pot with excellent drainage holes.
- The stems can grow long and almost horizontally, so a stable pot with enough space is recommended.
- As the stems mature, they may benefit from support or room to naturally lean and hang over the edge of the container.
- Repot when necessary, preferably during the active growing season.
🌸 Flowering
- Produces beautiful purple-pink flowers along the upper portions of the stems.
- Even plants with elongated or hanging stems can flower prolifically when provided with suitable growing conditions.
- Bright sunlight and proper watering help encourage healthy flowering.
🌵 Growth Habit
- This subspecies is generally easy to grow and can remain solitary or produce a few branches from the base.
- Its cylindrical, dark blue-green stems can grow up to approximately 50 cm long.
- The dense covering of short, pale spines gives the plant a distinctive and attractive appearance.
