🌵 Care Guide
Mammillaria spinosissima, commonly known as the Spiny Pincushion Cactus, is a beautiful cylindrical cactus admired for its attractive red-brown or white spines and stunning pink flowers. The flowers form a distinctive crown-like ring around the apex, making this a particularly attractive flowering cactus for collectors and patio gardens.
☀️ Light
- Thrives in bright light and full, filtered sunlight.
- Provide plenty of sunlight to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
- If grown indoors, place it near a bright window where it receives several hours of good light.
- Protect from sudden exposure to intense afternoon sunlight, especially when moving the plant outdoors.
💧 Watering
- Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry.
- Depending on the growing conditions, watering may be required approximately every 2–3 weeks.
- Winter: Water very sparingly and keep the plant nearly dry.
- ⚠️ Avoid keeping the soil constantly moist, as excess moisture can lead to root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
- Prefers warm temperatures during the active growing season.
- Enjoys relatively dry conditions and does best with good air circulation.
- Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions.
🌱 Soil
- Requires porous, fast-draining soil.
- A sandy or gritty cactus mix with good drainage is ideal.
- Avoid heavy, moisture-retentive soils that remain wet for long periods.
🍽️ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- No fertilizer is required during the winter resting period.
🪴 Potting
- Use a pot with excellent drainage holes.
- It makes an excellent patio and container plant.
- Repot when necessary, preferably during the active growing season.
- No regular pruning is required.
🌸 Flowering
- Produces beautiful pink, funnel-shaped flowers that form a crown-like ring around the top of the stem.
- The flowers can reach approximately 2 cm in size.
- Good sunlight and proper seasonal watering help encourage flowering.
🐛 Pests
- This species is generally relatively disease resistant.
- Occasionally, it may be affected by pests such as mealybugs.
- Inspect the plant regularly and maintain good air circulation to help prevent pest problems.
