🌵 Care Guide
Mammillaria matudae is a beautiful, seed-grown cactus known for its slender cylindrical stems, intricate spine arrangement, and distinctive sprawling growth habit. As the plant matures, it produces a stunning crown-like ring of brilliant pink to purplish-red flowers around the tips of its stems.
☀️ Light
- Requires bright light and can be grown in full sunlight once the roots are well established.
- Gradually introduce the plant to strong sunlight to prevent sunburn.
- Good sunlight helps maintain healthy growth and encourages flowering.
💧 Watering
- Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry.
- Autumn & Winter: Reduce watering significantly and keep the plant relatively dry.
- ⚠️ Avoid frequent watering, as consistently wet soil can cause root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
- Prefers warm temperatures between 18–32°C.
- Can tolerate cooler conditions when kept completely dry.
- Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions.
🌱 Soil
- Requires a porous, fast-draining cactus soil mix.
- Adding pumice, coarse sand, or perlite helps improve drainage.
- A gritty, mineral-rich mix is ideal for healthy root development.
🍽️ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and early summer with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Avoid fertilizing during the winter resting period.
🪴 Potting
- Use a pot with excellent drainage holes.
- Allow enough room for the plant’s cylindrical stems to develop and eventually form its characteristic sprawling habit.
- Repot during the active growing season when the plant outgrows its container.
🌸 Flowering
- Produces a beautiful crown-like ring of brilliant pink to purplish-red flowers during spring.
- The flowers form around the upper portion of the stems, creating a distinctive crown effect.
- Good sunlight and proper winter rest can encourage abundant flowering.
