🌵 Care Guide
Parodia scopa, formerly known as Notocactus scopa, is an attractive globular to shortly cylindrical cactus admired for its dense covering of fine, pale spines. The spines can give the plant a soft, brush-like appearance, while mature plants can produce beautiful yellow flowers near the crown. It is a relatively easy-to-grow cactus that performs well in bright light and a porous, well-draining soil mix.
☀️ Light
- Prefers bright light to partial sun.
- Morning sunlight is beneficial for healthy growth and attractive spine development.
- During very hot summer afternoons, provide some light shade to prevent scorching.
- Indoors, place it near a bright east or south-facing window.
- Gradually acclimate the plant to stronger sunlight if it has been grown in lower light.
💧 Watering
- Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry.
- Allow excess water to drain completely before watering again.
- Autumn & Winter: Reduce watering significantly and keep the plant relatively dry.
- ⚠️ Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet, as excess moisture can lead to root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
- Prefers moderate to warm temperatures during active growth.
- Can tolerate cooler temperatures when kept completely dry.
- Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions.
- A cool, dry winter rest can help encourage flowering.
🌱 Soil
- Requires a porous, fast-draining cactus mix.
- Add pumice, perlite, or coarse sand to improve drainage and aeration.
- A gritty, mineral-rich mixture is ideal for healthy root development.
- Avoid heavy soils that retain moisture for long periods.
🍽️ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Fertilize only while the plant is actively growing.
- Do not fertilize during the winter resting period.
🪴 Potting
- Use a pot with excellent drainage holes.
- Choose a container that is only slightly larger than the root system.
- Repot approximately every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.
- Allow disturbed roots to dry before watering after repotting.
🌸 Flowering
- Produces beautiful yellow flowers near the crown of the plant.
- Flowering generally occurs during the warmer growing season.
- Bright light, healthy active growth, and a cool, dry winter rest can help encourage blooming.
- Mature plants may produce several flowers during a good growing season.
🌵 Growth & Appearance
- Usually develops a rounded to shortly cylindrical green body.
- The body is covered with numerous fine spines that create its characteristic brush-like appearance.
- It is a relatively compact cactus and is well suited to container cultivation.
- Its dense spination and attractive yellow flowers make it an excellent addition to a cactus collection.
