ðĩ Care Guide
Notocactus submammulosus, now generally treated as Parodia mammulosa subsp. submammulosa, is a beautiful globular cactus native to Uruguay and Argentina. It is admired for its green, rounded body, prominent ribs, attractive spines, and bright yellow flowers. It is also known by names such as Tom Thumb and Lemon Ball
âïļ Light
- Prefers bright light to full sun.
- Morning sunlight is especially beneficial for compact growth and flowering.
- During extremely hot summer weather, provide some protection from harsh afternoon sunlight.
- Indoors, place it near a bright south or east-facing window.
- Gradually acclimate the plant to stronger sunlight to prevent scorching.
ð§ Watering
- Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry.
- Allow excess water to drain completely before watering again.
- Autumn: Gradually reduce watering as temperatures and growth decrease.
- Winter: Keep the plant relatively dry and water very sparingly.
- â ïļ Avoid constantly wet soil, as excess moisture can cause root rot.
ðĄïļ Temperature
- Prefers warm conditions during the active growing season.
- Can tolerate cooler conditions when kept completely dry.
- Protect from prolonged frost and cold, wet conditions.
- A cool and relatively dry winter rest can help encourage flowering.
ðą Soil
- Requires a porous, fast-draining cactus soil mix.
- Add pumice, perlite, or coarse sand to improve drainage.
- A gritty, mineral-rich mixture is ideal for healthy root development.
- Avoid heavy soils that retain moisture for long periods.
ð―ïļ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Fertilize only while the plant is actively growing.
- Do not fertilize during the winter resting period.
ðŠī Potting
- Use a pot with excellent drainage holes.
- Choose a container that is only slightly larger than the root system.
- Repot approximately every 2â3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.
- Handle carefully during repotting to avoid damaging the spines and roots.
ðļ Flowering
- Produces beautiful light yellow to yellow flowers during the growing season.
- Flowers appear near the crown and can reach approximately 5 cm in diameter.
- Flowering generally occurs during spring and summer.
- Good sunlight, active growth, and a cool, dry winter rest can encourage flowering.
ðĩ Growth & Appearance
- Usually develops a rounded, globular body with a slightly flattened crown.
- The green body develops prominent ribs with attractive tubercles and clusters of spines.
- It generally remains compact, making it suitable for container cultivation.
- Mature plants can reach approximately 15 cm in diameter under suitable conditions.
âĻ Special Feature
- Its rounded body and attractive spination make it an excellent collector’s cactus.
- The bright yellow flowers create a beautiful contrast against the green body.
- Notocactus submammulosus is a synonym of Parodia mammulosa and is currently treated within the Parodia mammulosa group.
