🌵 Care Guide
Notocactus elegans, often considered a synonym of Parodia elegans, is a beautiful small cactus admired for its rounded, slightly flattened green body and attractive yellow spines. It is a relatively easy-to-grow cactus and is especially appreciated for its bright yellow flowers that appear near the crown during the growing season.
☀️ Light
- Prefers bright light to partial sun.
- Morning sunlight is beneficial, while intense afternoon sunlight should be filtered during very hot summer weather.
- Indoors, place it near a bright east or south-facing window.
- Gradually acclimate the plant to stronger sunlight to prevent sunburn.
💧 Watering
- Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry.
- Allow excess water to drain completely before watering again.
- Autumn & Winter: Reduce watering significantly and keep the plant relatively dry.
- ⚠️ Avoid overwatering, as prolonged moisture can lead to root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
- Prefers warm temperatures during the active growing season.
- Can tolerate cooler conditions when kept completely dry.
- Protect from frost and prolonged cold, damp conditions.
🌱 Soil
- Requires a porous, fast-draining cactus soil mix.
- Adding pumice, perlite, or coarse sand improves drainage and reduces moisture retention.
- A gritty, mineral-rich mixture is ideal for healthy root growth.
- Avoid heavy soils that remain wet for long periods.
🍽️ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Fertilize only while the plant is actively growing.
- Do not fertilize during the winter resting period.
🪴 Potting
- Use a pot with excellent drainage holes.
- Repot approximately every 2–3 years, preferably during spring.
- Choose a container that is only slightly larger than the root system.
- After repotting, allow disturbed roots to dry before resuming watering.
🌸 Flowering
- Produces beautiful bright yellow flowers near the crown.
- Flowering generally occurs during spring or early summer.
- Plenty of light during the growing season helps encourage flowering.
- A suitable cool and relatively dry winter rest can help promote blooming.
🌵 Growth & Appearance
- Usually develops a rounded to slightly flattened green body.
- Its attractive yellow spines provide a beautiful contrast against the green body.
- It remains relatively compact and is well suited to container cultivation.
- With proper care, it can remain an attractive specimen for many years.
