Parodia haselbergii (formerly Notocactus haselbergii) is a compact, globular cactus prized for its dense covering of soft white spines and vivid orange-red flowers. It’s native to southern Brazil and is well-loved by cactus collectors for its relatively easy care and reliable blooming.

Here’s a detailed care guide:

🌵 Parodia haselbergii Care Guide

☀️ Light

  • Prefers bright indirect light to partial sun.

  • Indoors: Place in a bright east or south-facing window.

  • Outdoors: Enjoys morning sun, but protect from intense afternoon sun, which can scorch its delicate spines.

💧 Watering

  • Water deeply, then allow soil to dry out completely.

  • During spring to early fall: Water every 5-7 days, depending on temperature and humidity.

  • In winter: Reduce watering drastically—once a month or not at all, especially if kept cool.

🌱 Soil

  • Needs a very well-draining cactus mix but in north India add cocopeat 10 percent

  • Add extra pumice, perlite, or coarse sand to avoid water retention.

  • Poor drainage = high risk of root rot.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Ideal range: 65–80°F (18–27°C).

  • Can tolerate down to 40°F (4°C) if completely dry.

  • Not frost-tolerant—bring indoors in winter in colder climates.

🍽️ Fertilizer

  • Use a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring–summer).

  • No fertilizer during dormancy.

🪴 Growth & Repotting

  • Slow-growing, stays globular and small (rarely over 4 inches tall).

  • Repot every 2–3 years in early spring.

  • Use a pot with excellent drainage.

🌸 Flowering

  • Produces bright red to orange flowers, often in summer.

  • Blooms reliably with enough light and if allowed a cool, dry winter rest.
