🌵 Care Guide
Parodia haselbergii (formerly Notocactus haselbergii) is a beautiful compact, globular cactus admired for its dense covering of soft white spines and vivid orange-red flowers. Native to southern Brazil, this slow-growing species remains relatively small and is a great choice for cactus collectors.
☀️ Light
- Prefers bright indirect light to partial sun.
- Indoors, place it near a bright east or south-facing window.
- Outdoors, morning sunlight is beneficial, while intense afternoon sun should be avoided to protect its delicate spines.
💧 Watering
- Spring to Early Fall: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry.
- Depending on temperature and humidity, watering may be required approximately every 5–7 days during active growth.
- Winter: Reduce watering significantly or keep the plant dry, especially when kept cool.
- ⚠️ Avoid overwatering, as poor drainage and constantly wet soil can cause root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
- Prefers temperatures between 18–27°C.
- Can tolerate temperatures around 4°C for short periods if kept completely dry.
- Protect from frost and prolonged cold conditions.
🌱 Soil
- Requires a very well-draining, porous cactus soil mix.
- For growing in North India, adding around 10% cocopeat can help balance the mix, especially in dry conditions.
- Adding pumice, perlite, or coarse sand further improves drainage.
- ⚠️ Poor drainage and moisture-retentive soil can significantly increase the risk of root rot.
🍽️ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and summer with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Do not fertilize during the winter dormant period.
🪴 Potting
- Parodia haselbergii is a slow-growing cactus that generally remains small and globular.
- Use a pot with excellent drainage holes.
- Repot approximately every 2–3 years, preferably in early spring.
🌸 Flowering
- Produces beautiful bright reddish-orange flowers, often during summer.
- Good light and a cool, dry winter rest can encourage reliable flowering.
- The vibrant flowers create a striking contrast against the plant’s dense white spines.
