ðĩ Care Guide
Parodia leninghausii, also known as the Lemon Ball Cactus, Golden Ball Cactus, or Yellow Tower Cactus, is a beautiful cactus admired for its dense covering of fine golden spines and attractive yellow flowers. Native to southern Brazil, this species starts with a rounded form and gradually develops into a columnar cactus as it matures.
âïļ Light
- Thrives in bright light and good sunlight.
- Provide several hours of sunlight each day for compact growth and healthy golden spines.
- Indoors, place it near a bright south or east-facing window.
- When moving the plant into stronger sunlight, acclimate it gradually to prevent sunburn.
ð§ Watering
- Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry.
- Autumn & Winter: Reduce watering significantly and allow the plant to remain mostly dry.
- This species naturally experiences a relatively dry winter period in its native habitat.
- â ïļ Avoid keeping the soil continuously moist, as excess water can cause root rot.
ðĄïļ Temperature
- Prefers warm temperatures during its active growing season.
- Can tolerate cool winter conditions when kept completely dry.
- Protect the plant from prolonged frost and wet conditions during cold weather.
ðą Soil
- Requires a porous, fast-draining cactus soil mix.
- Adding pumice, perlite, or coarse sand improves drainage.
- A gritty, mineral-rich mix is ideal for healthy root growth.
ð―ïļ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Avoid fertilizing during the winter resting period.
ðŠī Potting
- Use a sturdy pot with excellent drainage holes.
- Young plants are generally rounded, while mature plants develop a taller, columnar form.
- Older plants may produce offsets from the base and gradually form clusters.
- Repot when necessary, preferably during the active growing season.
ðļ Flowering
- Produces beautiful yellow flowers at the top of mature plants.
- Flowers can reach approximately 5 cm in diameter.
- Flowering usually occurs once the plant reaches maturity, generally at around 20 cm or more in height.
- Good sunlight and proper seasonal care encourage flowering.
