🌵 Care Guide
Acanthocalycium spiniflorum is an attractive globular to slightly cylindrical cactus admired for its green to bluish-green body, prominent ribs, and strong spines. It is a relatively easy-to-grow species that can produce beautiful funnel-shaped flowers in shades of white, pink, or lavender during the growing season. Its compact form and attractive flowering make it a great addition to a cactus collection.
☀️ Light
- Prefers bright light to full sun.
- Morning and filtered sunlight are beneficial for healthy growth and flowering.
- During extremely hot summer afternoons, provide some light shade to prevent scorching.
- Indoors, place it near a bright south or east-facing window.
- Gradually acclimate the plant to stronger sunlight if it has been grown in lower light.
💧 Watering
- Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry.
- Allow excess water to drain completely before watering again.
- Autumn & Winter: Reduce watering significantly and keep the plant relatively dry.
- ⚠️ Avoid keeping the soil continuously wet, as excess moisture can cause root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
- Prefers moderate to warm temperatures during active growth.
- Can tolerate cooler temperatures when kept completely dry.
- Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions.
- A cool, dry winter rest can help encourage flowering during the following growing season.
🌱 Soil
- Requires a porous, fast-draining cactus mix.
- Add pumice, perlite, or coarse sand to improve drainage and aeration.
- A gritty, mineral-rich mixture is ideal for healthy root development.
- Avoid heavy soils that retain moisture for long periods.
🍽️ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Fertilize only while the plant is actively growing.
- Do not fertilize during the winter resting period.
🪴 Potting
- Use a pot with excellent drainage holes.
- Choose a container that is only slightly larger than the root system.
- Repot approximately every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.
- Handle the plant carefully during repotting because of its spines.
- Allow disturbed roots to dry before watering after repotting.
🌸 Flowering
- Produces beautiful funnel-shaped flowers during the growing season.
- Flowers can appear in shades of pink, depending on the plant.
- Flowers generally develop near the upper part of the cactus.
- Good light, healthy active growth, and a cool, dry winter rest can help encourage blooming.

- Usually develops a rounded to slightly elongated green or bluish-green body.
- Prominent ribs are lined with areoles bearing strong spines.
- It generally remains compact when grown in a container.
- Its combination of attractive spination and colorful flowers makes it an excellent collector’s cactus.
