🌵 Care Guide
Ferocactus latispinus ‘Rubra’ is a striking barrel-shaped cactus admired for its beautiful reddish to vibrant spines. This seed-grown variety develops a bold appearance with plenty of sunlight and can produce attractive flowers when mature.
☀️ Light
- Thrives in bright light to full sun.
- Ideally provide around 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Indoors, place it near a bright south-facing window.
- Good light also helps maintain the vibrant color of its reddish spines.
💧 Watering
- Spring to Fall: Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry.
- Winter: Water very sparingly and allow the soil to remain dry for longer periods.
- ⚠️ Avoid water collecting around the base, as consistently wet roots can cause root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
- Prefers warm temperatures between 21–32°C during active growth.
- Can tolerate temperatures around 0°C for short periods if kept completely dry.
- Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions.
🌱 Soil
- Requires a fast-draining, porous cactus soil mix.
- Adding pumice, coarse sand, cinder or perlite can further improve drainage.
- A gritty mineral-rich mix helps prevent excess moisture around the roots.
🍽️ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and summer with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Avoid fertilizing during the winter resting period.
🪴 Potting
- Always use a sturdy pot with excellent drainage holes.
- Repot approximately every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.
- Allow the soil to dry properly after repotting before watering.
🌸 Flowering
- Mature plants can produce beautiful purple to reddish flowers.
- Abundant sunlight and a cooler, dry winter rest can help encourage flowering.
- Flowering may vary depending on the plant’s age and growing conditions.
