🌵 Care Guide

Echinopsis subdenudata, commonly known as a Domino Cactus, is a beautiful, almost spineless globular cactus admired for its smooth grey-green body and spectacular fragrant flowers. It may grow as a solitary plant or produce offsets from the base. Mature plants can produce large, elegant white to very light pink flowers with long, narrow tubes, making this one of the most rewarding flowering cacti for a collection.

☀️ Light

  • Requires bright light and good sunlight for healthy growth and flowering.
  • Morning sunlight is beneficial, while harsh afternoon sunlight should be avoided during very hot summer weather.
  • Excessive scorching sunlight can cause the plant to become stressed or develop a compressed appearance.
  • Indoors, place it near a bright east or south-facing window with protection from intense afternoon sun.
  • Gradually acclimate the plant when increasing its exposure to direct sunlight.

💧 Watering

  • Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry.
  • Allow excess water to drain completely before watering again.
  • Autumn & Winter: Reduce watering significantly and keep the plant relatively dry.
  • ⚠️ Avoid overwatering, as prolonged moisture can lead to root rot.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Prefers warm temperatures during the active growing season.
  • Protect from extreme heat combined with intense direct sunlight.
  • During winter, keep the plant relatively dry and protect it from prolonged freezing temperatures.

🌱 Soil

  • Requires a porous, fast-draining cactus soil mix.
  • Adding pumice, perlite, or coarse sand improves drainage and prevents water retention.
  • A gritty, mineral-rich mix is ideal for healthy root development.
  • Avoid heavy soils that remain wet for long periods.

🍽️ Fertilizer

  • Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
  • Fertilize only while the plant is actively growing.
  • Stop fertilizing during the winter resting period.

🪴 Potting

  • Use a pot with excellent drainage holes.
  • Provide enough room for the roots without choosing an excessively large container.
  • Repot when the plant outgrows its container, preferably during the active growing season.
  • As the plant can produce offsets from the base, a slightly wider container may be useful for mature specimens.

🌸 Flowering

  • Produces spectacular white to very light pink, fragrant flowers with long, narrow funnel-shaped tubes.
  • The flowers can reach approximately 15–22 cm in length.
  • Flowering generally occurs from late spring through summer.
  • The flowers are primarily night-blooming and can remain open through the night, although each flower is at its best for approximately one day.
  • Mature plants can produce several flowers at the same time.

🌵 Growth & Appearance

  • The plant has a rounded to slightly flattened grey-green body and is usually almost spineless.
  • Short cream or greyish-brown spines may be present but are often hidden by the woolly areoles.
  • It typically grows around 5–8 cm tall and 7–12 cm wide, although cultivated plants can become considerably larger.
  • Plants may remain solitary or gradually produce offsets near the base.
