ðĩ Care Guide
Echinocactus grusonii ‘Brevispinus’ is a rare and attractive form of the famous Golden Barrel Cactus, distinguished by its very short, stubby yellow spines. This unusual spine form gives the plant a cleaner, softer appearance while retaining the classic rounded barrel shape of the species.
âïļ Light
- Thrives in bright light to full sun.
- Outdoors, provide plenty of direct sunlight for healthy growth and strong spine color.
- Indoors, place it near the brightest south or west-facing window.
- When introducing the plant to stronger sunlight, acclimate it gradually to prevent sunburn.
ð§ Watering
- Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry.
- During hot summer conditions, watering may be required approximately every 15â20 days, depending on the soil and environment.
- Autumn & Winter: Water very sparingly or keep the plant dry during dormancy.
- â ïļ Avoid overwatering, as constantly wet soil can quickly lead to root rot.
ðĄïļ Temperature
- Thrives in warm temperatures between 20â35°C.
- Can tolerate brief drops to around 5°C if kept completely dry.
- Protect from frost and prolonged cold conditions.
ðą Soil
- Requires a porous, fast-draining cactus soil mix.
- Adding pumice, perlite, or coarse sand improves drainage and prevents water retention.
- A gritty, mineral-rich mix is ideal for healthy root development.
ð―ïļ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and summer with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Do not fertilize during the winter dormant period.
ðŠī Potting
- Use a sturdy pot with excellent drainage holes.
- Repot approximately every 2â3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.
- Handle the plant carefully during repotting, even though its spines are shorter than those of the typical Golden Barrel.
ðļ Flowering
- Mature plants can produce beautiful bright yellow flowers from late spring to summer.
- The flowers form a ring around the woolly crown at the top of the cactus.
- Plenty of sunlight and proper seasonal care help encourage flowering.
â Special Feature
- The ‘Brevispinus’ form is particularly valued for its very short, stubby yellow spines.
- Its compact spination gives the plant a smoother and cleaner appearance compared with the typical Golden Barrel Cactus.
- Mature plants may also produce offsets, which can eventually form attractive clusters.
