🌵 Care Guide
Astrophytum myriostigma cv. ‘Onzuka Type’ is a highly attractive form of the Bishop’s Cap Cactus, admired for its distinctive and often dramatic white flecking across the green body. The irregular pattern of white scales gives each plant a unique appearance, making it especially popular among cactus collectors. It is a slow-growing cactus that can produce beautiful yellow flowers when mature.
☀️ Light
- Prefers bright light to partial sun.
- Morning sunlight is beneficial, while intense afternoon sunlight should be filtered during very hot summer weather.
- Indoors, place it near a bright east or south-facing window.
- Gradually acclimate the plant to stronger direct sunlight to prevent sunburn.
- Good light helps maintain compact growth and encourages flowering.
💧 Watering
- Spring & Summer: Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry.
- Allow excess water to drain completely before watering again.
- Autumn & Winter: Reduce watering significantly and keep the plant relatively dry.
- ⚠️ Avoid prolonged moisture, as Astrophytum can be susceptible to root rot when kept in wet soil.
🌡️ Temperature
- Prefers warm temperatures during the active growing season.
- Can tolerate cooler conditions when kept completely dry.
- A cool, dry winter rest can be beneficial for healthy growth and flowering.
- Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions.
🌱 Soil
- Requires a porous, mineral-rich, fast-draining cactus mix.
- Use a gritty growing medium with relatively little organic matter.
- Adding pumice, perlite, coarse sand, or other mineral materials improves drainage.
- Avoid heavy, moisture-retentive soils.
🍽️ Fertilizer
- Feed once a month during spring and summer with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
- Fertilize only while the plant is actively growing.
- Do not fertilize during the winter resting period.
🪴 Potting
- Use a shallow or moderately sized pot with excellent drainage holes.
- Choose a container that is only slightly larger than the root system to avoid excess moisture.
- Repot approximately every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.
- Handle carefully to avoid scratching the delicate body and disturbing its white flecking.
🌸 Flowering
- Produces attractive yellow flowers, similar to the typical Astrophytum myriostigma.
- Flowers generally appear during the warmer growing season.
- Plenty of light, proper watering, and a cool, dry winter rest can encourage flowering.
✨ Special Feature
- The ‘Onzuka Type’ is especially valued for its distinctive white flecking pattern.
- The amount, size, and arrangement of the white scales can vary considerably between individual plants.
- This natural variation makes every specimen visually unique and highly desirable to collectors.
